We began our project by inviting each child to record themselves saying their name. We listened closely to the unique sounds of each voice and printed a visual image of each child’s sound recording (sound wave).

Observing and Recreating: The children carefully observed the lines, shapes, and lengths of their own sound waves.

Using a canvas, they recreated the patterns by painting the different- sized lines they saw.

Once the painted sound waves were complete, Morah applied glue and the children sprinkled glitter over the lines, transforming their voices into a beautiful textured work of art

Some friends chose to trace their sound waves.

Preschool friends stamped their names onto the canvas using letter stamps for extra literacy practice!

How cool!

Pre-K friends added their name to the canvas, incorporating early literacy skills.

Next, we painted watercolor around it!

The process who so much and incorporated so many different learning avenues.

We also practiced making straight/silent lines

Our Motion Project was inspired by the children’s current interests and the movement-filled energy in our classroom. Lately, many of the children have been deeply engaged in sports, hockey, dance, and the excitement surrounding the World Cup, often pretending to be athletes, dancers, and players during play. We noticed how often they were using their bodies to express action, strength, balance, and emotion, and this sparked the idea for a project centered around motion. We wanted to give the children an opportunity to study how their bodies move, the shapes they can create, and how movement can be captured through photography, drawing, and sculpture. #WonderOfMotion #CreateToLearn #ReggioEmilia

Step 1: Exploring how our bodies move and the different shapes our arms and legs can make. Each child chose their favorite motion pose—whether it was a hockey pose, a dance pose, a yoga pose. We then captured each pose using a Polaroid camera.

Step 2: Next, we drew pictures of ourselves in our chosen pose. We paid close attention to the details in our Polaroid photos, making sure our drawings matched our poses. We also colored in our clothing and selected skin tones that reflected ourselves.

Step 3: The third step of our project involved building the structure of our bodies with wire.

With guidance from Morah Lily, the children created a head, arms, and legs out of wire.

Then, each child met with Morah Deanna to carefully shape the wire body so it matched the pose shown in their photo and drawing.

The process was so much fun!

Wire can be bent to make so many different shapes!

So proud of our work!

In the final step, we added clay around the wire structure to turn our figures into 3D sculptures

Once the clay had dried, we used markers to color our sculptures so they resembled the Polaroid pictures of us striking our motion poses.

This week, our Wonders Lab explorers investigated light in its many forms. We discovered rainbows in prisms, created shadows, experimented with reflections, and explored how light changes what we see.

We are so excited to welcome you to the POTA Wonders Lab. An immersive 8-week journey designed with creativity, beauty, experimentation, and big ideas. Each week explores one “wonder” of the world through both the arts and sciences, allowing children to think like artists, inventors, musicians, architects, naturalists, and storytellers.

☀️ During the summer session, extended day runs until 5:00 PM daily.

🇺🇸 POTA will be closed this Friday for the July 4th weekend.

🩳 We enjoy water play each day (unless the weather really interferes), so please send your child WEARING their bathing suit and closed toe water shoes, and with sunscreen ALREADY applied every morning. If we skip water play for the day, we will change them into their clothes.

Looking forward to an exciting summer filled with wonder! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! 😎

One of the greatest gifts has been getting to know each of your children, their unique personalities, their strengths, their kind hearts, and all the little things that make them so special. We are so proud of how much they have grown and of the caring, curious, and joyful people they are becoming.

The memories we made together are ones we will carry with us for a long time. While saying goodbye is never easy, we are so grateful for the time we shared.
